Sirwa massif: the kingdom of saffron

Located south of Toubkal Massif, the Jebel Siroua (3305 m) is an old volcanic massif, a land of kasbahs and fortified villages with their attics « called Igoudar », symbols of a very strong tradition. At the foot of the villages, fields irrigated by mountain streams, growing barley, wheat, saffron and almonds. The women weave beautiful carpets and sell the product at the souk of Taznaght, Sheep farming is another important resource for local people, many sheepfolds, called Azib, are occupied by the Berber a part of the year (spring and summer). The Siroua is clearly visible from the summit of Toubkal and is considered a « natural water tower » because of the snow that accumulates from December to March. This is an ideal area for walking through fantastic landscapes and deep valleys.
