The Saghro Mountain and Draa Valley trek offers travelers the chance to explore a lesser-known yet stunningly diverse region of southern Morocco. The journey begins with a crossing of the Saghro Mountains, often referred to as the “Moroccan Hoggar” for their striking volcanic formations. This range features a long ridge running parallel to the High Atlas, with a broader, gently sloping southern face.

As the trek continues, the landscape transitions into a more desert-like terrain. The Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s most scenic regions, reveals a breathtaking variety of environments: rocky plateaus (regs), sweeping sand dunes, lush palm oases, and centuries-old adobe villages. This valley once served as a major caravan route to the Sahara, rich in history and cultural significance.

This hike offers a soft introduction to Morocco’s desert regions. From Zagora, the gateway to the Sahara, southern Morocco opens up into a magnificent world of oases and sand dunes framed by the rugged Jbel Bani mountains.
