This hike takes place in a protected natural environment in the heart of Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains a pristine and lesser-known region of moderate altitude. The landscape is rich in biodiversity, featuring oak and cedar forests, natural springs and lakes, and high plateaus where Zayane shepherds establish their camps throughout much of the year.

Along the way, you may encounter a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, birds, and even eagles. The trek also offers meaningful encounters with the local Berber population, giving insight into their traditional way of life and deep connection to the land.

Middle Atlas Trekking Itinerary

Day 01 : Airport – Hotel / Riad

Upon arrival in Fez or Marrakech, you will be transferred to the heart of the medina (old city). Enjoy your first night in Morocco with an overnight stay in a charming hotel.

Day 02 : Marrakech or Fez | Khenifra | Toumliline lake: 3 hours walk.

Transfer through Khenifra to the village of Ait Nouh, the starting point of our hiking adventure. Upon arrival, meet our team of muleteers and enjoy a traditional lunch with a local family. In the afternoon, we hike through a scenic forest and a peaceful valley to reach Lake Toumliline. Dinner and overnight stay at the campsite.

Day 03 : Lake of tomliline 1050 m | Boumzil 1350 m: 5 hours walk.

We hike through a diverse forest of cedar, juniper, and oak, passing by a few traditional villages along the way. Continuing along the scenic Jnane Mass Valley, we pass near remote hamlets and encounter local shepherds moving their herds across the high plateau. Our journey ends at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the Boumzil Valley, where we set up camp for the night.

Day 04 : Boumzil 125o m | Tiglmamine 1630 m: 5 hours walk.

We continue our trek through the historic land of the Zayan, home of the legendary warriors of the Middle Atlas, including Mouha Ouhamou Zayani. The trail takes us through open pastures and dense forests of oak and cedar, with opportunities to enjoy traditional tea with local Berber families. This highland region is a major grazing area, often visited by transhumant herders. Today’s hike is pleasantly cool, offering a peaceful walk through wild and sublime natural landscapes along an easy trail. We set up our bivouac on the banks of the serene Tiglmamine Lake.

Day 05 : Tiglmamines Lake | Lake of Azigza 130o m: 5 hours walk.

We remain in Zayan territory, home to one of the most renowned tribes in Moroccan history, known for their warmth and hospitality. Our trail leads us through majestic cedar forests, rich in wildlife and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. These woodlands are home to Barbary macaques and include the renowned Ighoud cedar forest. We set up our bivouac on the tranquil shores of Lake Azigza.

Day 06 : Azigza Lake | Valley of oum rabia: 5 hours 30 walk.

We follow an easy mule track through a cedar forest, once home to the legendary Atlas lions and, historically, even tigers, both species disappeared from the region around 1970. Our route continues through the lush Oum Er-Rbia Valley, dotted with traditional villages and cultivated fields. We arrive at our campsite along the riverbank. In the afternoon, there’s an optional walk to explore the famous sources of the Oum Er-Rbia River, before returning to camp for the evening.

Day 07 : Oum Rabia | Fez

We leave our final camp and transfer to Oum Er-Rbia village to meet our transport back to Fez. Overnight stay at a traditional riad in the heart of the medina.

Day 8 : Fes

Enjoy a free day to explore the historic city of Fes at your own pace. Overnight stay at a charming traditional riad.

Day 9 : Fez – Volubilis – Meknes – Fez:

Take a full-day excursion to the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis and the imperial city of Meknes, followed by a return to Fez. Overnight stay at a traditional riad.

Day 8 : Fes: | Airport

Transfer to the airport. End of our services.
